Virginia (Take Four)

I’m posting “Virginia” today because it’s a happy song.

And also because it’s one of the states that showed us last night that there’s no such thing as a red state or a blue state. That there’s just United States.

We’ve got real drums, real claps, electric guitar, mandolin - and a bass track played by the baritone guitar.

And we’ve got a new president!

It’s a great production, a great mixdown for an amazing morning following a stunning night. I actually love this song in this mixdown - I think all the elements coalesce with a brightness (emotionally and audio-wise) that really lifts this song. I find that I like the overall impression and the combination of the elements than previous takes.

I’m more than a bit elated by Virginia, the election and “Virginia”! (Even though they’re real claps, I love clap tracks…)

And in stunningly good timing, a video of the acceptance speech last night loaded and the audio was running in the background during the bridge.

I love it, but then I’ve liked all the versions of all the songs; some more than others, but they all work for me. This album is destined to be my favorite of all of yours. Virginia feels particularly appropriate on this incredibly hopeful new day!

Love it! I don’t know if the worded bridge has ever resonated with me as much as this morning… but something about today has made it click. I actually caught myself singing along instead of “ba da bababa”. But, be it known: I still loooooooove the non-worded version :)

Hey, Christine, this is just such a fun song, and I absolutely love it! As I started to listen to the new version, my first thought was that there wasn’t a single thing that you could do with it that could possibly take away from it — it’s just so infectiously joy-filled. Well, OK, maybe if you let that “disco slut” add some Air Supply stuff to it…:-)

However, after listening to it several times, I have one little moment that distracts me every time. The little percussion bit just before the bridge…it always seems out of place to me. For what it’s worth…

Even so, every time I listen, it makes me smile…big!

hi everyone! just arrived in shepherdstown to do an all day training tomorrow. i like the photos on your avatars! Very cool to see what some of you look like!

Thanks for all the good thoughts…

and yea Tari - i don’t like that little thingee either. That was one of those things that Ben kept saying “hey i really like that!” and i was a little dubious. but it annoys me every time i hear it so it’s outta there.

simply beautiful !!! this is such a treat to have loved the original … as if we were sitting around with you when you first came up with it … and then hear it grow makes me love this song even more … it still feels the same as the first time … but much warmer, much more comfortable with all the other artists added.

Thank you for this treat today Christine !!! I can not wait to hear this one live with friends !!!

    Virginia for president 2012 :)
    I wanna be her.
    :)
What works most for me is the authentic tone of your voice throughout. You never get overly psyched. The words do that. You just sing about her triumphs.
And the matter of factness about that message is powerful. Hope today went well…..hugs, Tre :)

    Hey Christine,
We had a weird misstep at our first encounter at Bett’s house concert, since resolved. But I am glad to hook up to you here and appreciate your sharing this beautiful uplifting song. It’s apropos for the times–change is coming and if we can all just change our brains a little, we can embrace it. Virginia.
    Cheers

my honest opinion? this version is a bit over-produced. starting with the swooping-in first sound to the voice effects to the background singers… the acoustic, stand-alone version of this was so wonderfully pure. this version is starting to sound like it’s trying so hard to almost be pop-y while still holding on to some acoustic roots that its all a bit muddled for me.

but that’s just one producer’s opinion.
